Global governance and international institutions

This class will focus on explaining the range of institutions that exist in contemporary world politics, with a focus on global institutions, and understanding the challenges they face. Students will develop a critical understanding of the challenges of global governance in general, as well as detailed knowledge of global governance in the areas of environment, trade and security via case studies. The class will devote particular attention to the role of China, the United States and the European Union and its members, among other states. With respect to the European Union, we will consider the unique characteristics of this example of far-reaching international cooperation and the strains it currently faces. With respect to non-state actors, our discussion will include the role of business interests and non-governmental organizations.

Robert Thomson is Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, where he is also Head of the School of Government and Public Policy. Prior to joining the University of Strathclyde, Professor Thomson held positions at the Universities of Groningen and Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. His research focuses on negotiations and policymaking, including studies of international negotiations on environmental standards and programmes, and comparative research on democratic representation. He is author of Resolving Controversy in the European Union (Cambridge University Press), and dozens of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on EU, international and national politics.
